After the success of JOHN, and as DV8 Physical Theatre celebrates its 30th anniversary, artistic director Lloyd Newson has decided to take time out from the company to reflect and think about the future. During this time, DV8 will put on hold the production of new work.

In the 30 years of leading DV8, Newson has won 55 national and international awards for his stage and film work, including a Helpmann Award, three Prix Italia, a Rose d’Or, and an International Emmy. He has received an honorary degree from Roehampton University and in 2013 was awarded an OBE for services to contemporary dance.

Across 18 stage productions, DV8 has toured to 86 cities in 34 countries worldwide, and performed at many of the world’s most prestigious theatres and festivals – including the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York, the Marinsky Theatre in St Petersburg and the Sydney Opera House. The National Theatre of Great Britain has co-produced the company’s four most recent works, culminating in 40 performances of JOHN at the Lyttelton Theatre. DV8 has also produced four films, commissioned by LWT, the BBC and Channel 4 all of which have been critically acclaimed and highly awarded. Newson himself directed the most recent of these films, ‘The Cost of Living’.

Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men premiered in 1988, and was the first of Newson’s work to be adapted for film (1990). Further film translations of stage shows includeStrange Fish (1992),Enter Achilles (1995).

In 2004, Newson directed the film version of The Cost of Living which was commissioned by Channel 4. It won 18 prizes, including the NOW Audience Choice Award at the Moving Pictures Festival of Toronto, and the Rose d’Or for Arts & Specials in 2005.

Over his career, Newson has been called ‘the iconoclast of the movement world’, ‘a theatrical genius’; a man who ‘reinvents the rules’ with each new work. The productions he has created with DV8 have been lauded as ‘splendid…uncompromising, cold-eyed, warm-hearted’, ‘bravely confrontational’, and ‘powerful and absorbing’.
